Chicago company makes Halloween costumes for 30 years

- Who will you be this Halloween weekend -- a ghost, a movie star or maybe a presidential candidate? All you have to do is throw on a costume and put on a mask and you can be somebody else. One Chicago company has been a leader in this frightening field for over 30 years.

These masks are the creation of a North Side Chicago company called "Be Something Studios." Be something, be anything but yourself when it comes to costume time. After all, masks and human beings go back a long way together.

"From ancient Chinese dynasties and even to Africa people have used masks. Either for celebration, to ward off evil spirits or to improve the yield of the crop," said Rich Zagone, Manager "Be Something Studios."

Rich Zagone and his father Phil are the chief fright makers at Be Something. It's a business Phil's family started over 30 years ago.

"We worked in the garage in the summer and the basement in the winter to make masks to sell during the summer for Halloween," said Phil Zagone, president of "Be Something Studios."

A few hundred masks then and now it's over 200,000 a year. All of them are handmade.

"Each mask starts in clay and from the clay we make one master mold. From that master mold we make one mask out of a special rubber which is used for production molds," said Rich Zagone.

That mask is turned into thousands and that's when rubber is turned into living gore.

Be Something Studios is the last big mask maker in the country and now you can find their masks all over the world. This one in Chicago is their most popular. You would be amazed where they come up with the ideas for these creations.

"A lot of nightmares. Some of my best ideas have been in my sleep," said Phil Zagone.

Nightmares! That's exactly what they make there. And for $20 to $90 you can "be something" at most costume shops.
